Tea Leaves

The primary use for Tea Leaves is to provide a brewed drink. There are a wide variety of leaves that each provide a unique taste and quality.  Teas may boost your immune system, fight off inflammation, and even ward off cancer and heart disease. While some brews provide more health advantages than others, there’s plenty of evidence that regularly drinking tea can have a lasting impact on your wellness.

The making of tea leaves suitable for brewing is comprised of starting with the raw cleaned tea leave and making what is called a tea cut suitable for brewing.

Hosokawa’s technology and roll is in the cleaning of the raw tea leaves to remove stems and stones via air classification. Once cleaned Hosokawa provides cutting mills to achieve the desired end size or tea cut. The desired end sizes range from coarse grinds of less than 1,500 µm to finer grinds of top sizes of 840 µm.

To achieve the above-mentioned cleaning and end particle sizes, Hosokawa equipment would include the Hosokawa Alpine MZM Air Classifier and the Hosokawa Alpine Rotoplex Granulator.

As with all organic materials, the system must be designed to safely handle the potential for a dust explosion. System protection can be obtained by incorporating any of the following basic design possibilities:

  • Designing the entire system for over-pressure and containment of the explosion as shown in this picture
  • Venting of the system to safely relieve the over-pressure
  • Operation under an inert atmosphere to remove the explosion potential
  • Utilizing a suppression system to quench the explosion before it propagates
