Cohesion, Uniformity & Dispersibility Testing
Cohesion, uniformity and dispersibility tests can be conducted using the Micron Powder Characteristics Tester PT-X. The system employs the methods developed by Ralph L. Carr (Carr Indices) to determine the “flowability and floodability” of dry powders. The model PT-X is the latest design of the Hosokawa Micron Powder Characteristics Tester which utilizes state-of-the art features to identify the specific characteristics of powdered samples for a wide range of application fields. This video demonstrates how to conduct tests for cohesion, uniformity, and dispersibility.
Cohesion can be measured at three levels: (less than 0.4g/cc, 0.4-0.9 g/cc, and greater than 0.9 g/cc. High bulk density results in finer particles. So it follows that the finer the particles, the greater the surface area. With greater surface area there is also a higher potential for cohesion.
The uniformity test can be completed for products outside of the parameters of performing a cohesion test. The uniformity test determines particle size at two points – D10 and D60. In this video, arbitrary values of 25 micron and 63 micron are given to D10 and D60, respectively, and the resulting uniformity is 2.5%.
Wide-ranging measurements
In addition to cohesion, uniformity, and dispersibility, the Micron Powder Characteristics Tester PT-X measures a range of dry powder characteristics including angle of repose, aerated density, compressibility, and angle of fall. Other key characteristics include packed density, angle of spatula, angle of difference, and particle size.
Among the Powder Tester’s key features is automated vibration with electronically
controlled vib-sensor for repeatable results and complete powder characterization
in one instrument. The unit reduces operator intervention, ensuring analysis
accuracy and repeatability while user friendly software reduces analysis time.
The compact design is 34% smaller than previous models and a specially designed feeder provides reliable sample feeding. Other key elements include test sieve identification, optional integrated HEPA filter dust protection, and multi-language functionality. The Micron Powder Characteristics Tester PT-X complies with FDA Tapped Bulk Density (USP) ASTM, Kawakita’s equation for compressibility.
