Carbon Black Processing

Carbon black is an essential component in the manufacture of rubber, plastics and liquids, enhancing these products by adding strength and durability. Carbon black is produced in a reactor in which a feed oil is introduced at the top. Combustion gases are introduced into an upper region of the reactor to supply sufficient heat to decompose the oil to form carbon black. In the reactor grit particles, or residue may be formed. These grit particles are an unwanted byproduct, adversely affecting the physical properties of the rubber and plastic products.

Traditionally a Mikro-Pulverizer hammer and screen mill has been employed by carbon black manufacturers to reduce the grit levels in the product in the range of 100 to 200 PPM +325 MESH. At Hosokawa Micron Powder Systems we have developed and enhanced two technologies to reduce grit levels even further.

The newly developed Mikro-LGM and Mikro-ACMe both greatly transcend the performance of conventional hammer and screen mills. In both machines, grit (residue) levels of 0 to 3 PPM +325 MESH and 1 to 5 PPM + 500 MESH may be realized with improved screen life.

Both mills can be retrofitted in existing process flow streams without major changes. Please refer to the flow sheet above. These technologies will dramatically improve the quality of your product and provide the opportunity to reach higher profit, value-added specialty products.
